Hatuey, an Indian chief to be burnt at the stake in 1511 in Cuba for insurrection, was compassionately invited to embrace the faith and so go to heaven. He asked if white men would already be there. When told this was a probability, he replied: "Then I will not be a Christian; for I would not go again to a place where I must find men so cruel."
